The project began in 2003 while I was teaching in the nearby city of Trujillo. My homeroom class at that time collected school supplies and donated them to the students at the elementary school San Judas Tadeo in Las Delicias. At the time San Judas Tadeo had about 80 students in two classrooms. The school was functioning in three classrooms (six grades). Although officially a public school, they were receiving little, if any, help from the local government (aside from teachers and a principal). As can be seen in the video "Colegio San Judas Tadeo Peru 2005 2006" (under the "Past: San Judas Tadeo" tab) the school was in bad condition with broken windows, damage from the elements, an unfinished fulbito court (soccer court made of concrete) and an outhouse-like bathroom with no running water. In general the students who attend San Judas Tadeo are from the poorest of the poor in the village. My students at that time were so moved by the school and students' difficult situation they then collected donations and gave Christmas gifts to each of the students.
In 2005 I moved to the United States and began working at St. John's Lutheran School. When my students learned about Las Delicias and San Judas Tadeo, they decided they wanted to continue the project. In 2006 the 7th and 8th graders at St. John's collected over $700.00 which was used to replace the broken windows and buy school supplies for each of the 80+ students. In 2007 the students were able to raise almost $2000. The money was used to surface and paint the school’s fulbito (soccer) court. As well goals were made and installed, and both soccer and volleyball equipment were purchased. As well each of the 80 students received a gym suit (as well as the 3 teachers) with the school’s logo and name embroidered on them. Each teacher, as well, received a bookshelf for her classroom. The donation can be watched in the video entitled, "Colegio San Judas Tadeo Peru 2006 2007" under the "Past: San Judas Tadeo" tab.
In 2008 St. John's students collected over $2000.00 which was used to build bathrooms with running water. This project can be viewed in the video, "Colegio San Judas Tadeo Peru 2007 2008" (under the "Past: San Judas Tadeo" tab).
Since that time the school San Judas Tadeo has begun to receive help from the local government and the focus of the project has shifted to a new challenge: The preschool: I.E. 1613. For the past four years St. John's students have been raising money to help these students have access to the kind of education that wealthier students receive. On the following pages you will find various projects which have been carried out, as well as the present goals for the project. Finally, there is a page with information on how to make a tax deductible donation if you would like to help out.
